Water systems and water management in the Czech Republic in conditions of climate change

The project focuses in particular on Specific Objective 1 of the Programme, namely the issue of drought and mitigation of its effects on human settlements, nature, and water supply. It aims to become a significant contribution in its area to the creation of the Czech climate package. However, it also deals with the issue of floods, focusing on the aspects of the climate change impact on the character of floods. In the field of industrial wastewater, the project focuses on the possibilities of reducing the volume and degree of pollution of wastewater from industrial activities, including cost and effect evaluation (proposals for techniques in the field of technological water circulation, reducing the use of technological water, reducing the volume and degree of pollution of discharged wastewater). Furthermore, proposals for possible progressive procedures and techniques for reducing industrial water pollution which, under normal circumstances, are not removed by the technologies of municipal wastewater treatment plants before discharge into the sewer, including cost evaluation.

Project background

“Centrum Voda” is a research project that seeks to answer the question of whether we will continue to have enough good quality water. Climate change and droughts associated with it, as well as human behaviour and needs, threaten water; therefore, it is necessary to look for solutions in the near future.

Project aims

The aim of the project is, among others, to contribute to the fulfilment and updating of basic concepts at the state and regional level, especially the Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Czech Republic, the Concept of Protection Against Drought Consequences for the Czech Republic, National River Basin Plans and Flood Risk Management Plans. We think that the project results will also be reflected in legislative and methodological areas.

Project methodology

In addition to TGM WRI, seven other research organizations are participating in the project. The project solution is based on seven work packages, for which the selected project partners are responsible, plus a package for project coordination and management. The issue of industrial wastewater is addressed in packages WP4 and WP5. For more details about the project, see here.
